2022 ADVANCED WEEKEND OF RECOVERY REGISTRATION CLOSES TODAY

Registration closes at the end of today (7/27) for the Advanced WOR @ Alta, UT. This year’s Advanced WOR (August 12th – 14th ) will focus on the theme “Exploring Our Connections With Self and Others” and is open for partners to attend as well as for Alumni to attend alone.

    ALUMNI SUPPORT GROUPS UPDATE

After the successful completion of an initial series of Zoom-based Support Groups in April 2022, a second series of online accessible Alumni Support Groups have been filled and will begin in early August.

Congruent with our commitment to grassroots participation and volunteer services, Support Groups are designed to engage Alumni in the operation of this project:  Adam Frost has assumed the duties of oversight and management; Drew Wiggins conducted intake interviews for the second series of groups; Mark J., Kirk P., Anthony S., and Andrew V. will be Peer Leaders for these new groups. In addition, Diana Thomas (WOR Facilitator) will provide Supervision to the Peer Leaders. Amy Ellis (Nova University) and Jim Struve (Executive Director) provide organizational consultation for this project.

These Alumni Support Groups are an example of MenHealing’s investment in helping individual survivors to:

         overcome isolation,

grow connections through engagement with a larger community of survivors, and

contribute their energy to movement-building that inspires more hope and healing.

    MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

In addition to our Newsletter sharing news about the work of MenHealing, we will begin to include periodic “Messages from MenHealing’s ED” to offer commentary about important matters.

For example, in the present moment it seems important to acknowledge the distress many of us may be experiencing as we are engulfed by tumultuous cultural events. As male survivors and allies, each of us is vulnerable to internal triggers when we are bombarded by media reports of ever-increasing incidents of violence. We may feel the pain of isolation as we witness efforts to erase basic human rights of others or ourselves. We are susceptible to absorb rage about acts of injustice. During times like now, it is especially important that we embrace the power of hope. Reach out to others and share your feelings. Join with others to create community. Use the skills that have served your own healing. Seek opportunities for active involvement where you feel you can help to make change. And remember:

    TOGETHER WE ARE STRONGER.

Jim Struve, Executive Director of MenHealing

    NEW VIDEO RELEASES

HEAL (Helping Everyone Accept Love) was a webinar hosted by MenHealing on June 14th. This webinar featured a virtual premiere of “Gentle Man,” a new release by Soren Song (a survivor who is also a singer/songwriter from New York). The premiere was followed by a trauma-informed panel discussion about healing.  Here is access to the video of this webinar.

We have expanded the video collection from the April 10th “Voices of Healing: Trans and Nonbinary Survivors SPEAK OUT” Live Event.  In addition to the full-length video of the Live Event, individual videos for each of the four presenters are being released separately. The first two are available now with the other two presentations being released in the next couple of weeks.

    OUTREACH AROUND THE WORLD

The SW Londoner (England) newspaper recently published a comprehensive article that focused on male survivors of sexual victimization.  Jim Struve (MenHealing Executive Director) is one of the people quoted in the article and a couple of segments of video footage from his interview are also included. Special thanks to the reporter, Ayisha Sharma, for excellent coverage about male survivors.

NEW RESOURCE MATERIALS ADDED TO WEBSITE

Whether YOU are a survivor or an ally, we invite you to access the wealth of informational materials available at the Resources section of our MenHealing website. We have recently created a PDF guide in two parts that includes several examples of some TRUTHS AND UNTRUTHS about male survivors. This and other resource materials at our website are available for YOU to download and use for YOUR purpose of education and outreach. We also welcome your requests and suggestions for additional materials to help us expand our library of resources.

CONSIDER MAKING A DONATION TO MENHEALING in honor of 2022 GIVE OUT DAY, a month-long fundraising campaign (June 1st – 30th) for organizations that serve LGBTQIA+ communities. We invite YOU to consider donating an equal amount to FORGE, an organization with which MenHealing maintains on-going collaborations.

    COLLABORATION IN ACTION

MenHealing maintains an active commitment to collaboration with other organizations that are working on ending sexual violence and promoting healing. This issue we feature two current examples:

    ISABEL AND THE RUNAWAY TRAIN

MenHealing is a participating sponsor of this Austin, TX-based musical theater production with accompanying “train” - ing programs that teach people how to support survivors of sexual maltreatment in their personal and professional lives. This local and livestreamed dramedy is coming to life on stage April 21st – 30th as part of the City of Austin’s prestigious Artist Access Program.

ARTS & MIXED MEDIA WORKSHOP SERIES

Since announcing our new Art & Mixed Media Workshop series in December, the reception has been great. The workshops are facilitated by Margaret Hunter. Don’t miss this innovative opportunity for connection with other male survivor. You do not have to attend all of the series; each one is a stand alone, 4 week online workshop.

We are conducting the last one in this series in May and registration is now open (donation requested).   If May does not work for you, we will announce soon when another series opens.
