    ABOUT BEST FRIENDS

Best Friends, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, operates the nation’s largest sanctuary for homeless animals. On any given day, the Sanctuary is a healing home for up to 1,600 dogs, cats, birds, bunnies, horses, pigs and other animals. Best Friends has become the heart of a collaborative no-kill movement, and a model for the future of animal welfare. This collaborative service project is an example of MenHealing’s commitment to foster healing resources that contribute to movement building to end mistreatment for all living beings.

NEW VIDEO ADDED TO SKILLS FOR HEALING SERIES

Rich Sims (Somatic Educator and WOR Facilitator) has been busy working on production of six videos to increase awareness about somatic aspects of healing from trauma.  The newest video focuses on Body Awareness…

In this video, we "look out to look in” and explore and gain new skills to become aware of what’s actually going on both around us and inside our bodies as the events in our daily lives play out. This is one of the first steps in helping us gain the power to make the changes we would like to see in ourselves while helping to strengthen the positive qualities we already have.  (also available with Spanish subtitles)

MORE RESOURCES FROM MENHEALING AUTHORS POSTED TO PUBLICATIONS LANDING PAGE

We continue to introduce you to the wealth of publications authored by MenHealing Facilitators, Board, and Support Staff. Today we share links for two books and direct access for two pdf documents for book chapters.

Joining Forces: Empowering Male Survivors to Thrive is an inspirational new book written to empower male survivors of sexual victimization to develop skills they can use to overcome the effects of trauma and learn to thrive in their lives. Male survivors often struggle to feel any sense of hope for the future, so this book is designed to inspire survivors and their allies with easily learned skills developed over the course of the author’s 30-year career, and the real-life experiences of male survivors who have learned to thrive.

Is the bias against touch in psychotherapy justified? Is ethical touch an oxymoron? Can the recovery process be complete without healing touch? Mental health professionals are entrusted with the awesome responsibility of providing appropriate treatment for clients in a safe environment that nurtures trust, a necessary ingredient for optimum movement through the therapeutic process. Though treatment approaches vary, most modalities are verbally based and, in theory, exclude physical contact. Fearing that any form of touch would likely lead to sexual feelings or interaction, clinicians tend to shy away from the topic.

Here are links for two more PDF publications:

Abreaction is the revivification of past memory with the release of bound emotion and the recovery of repressed or dissociated aspects of a remembered event.  While abreaction is an integral part of most psychotherapeutic work, it is essential with sexual abuse survivors. It provides a psychic reworking of the trauma that identifies, releases, and assimilates the unresolved aspects of the abuse, allowing resolution and integration on both psychological and physiological levels.  This chapter focuses on the specific type of abreactive work involved in the recovery and healing of dissociated memories of childhood sexual abuse.

Much of the nomenclature inherited from the women’s movement is not fully applicable to and respectful of the individuality of our male clients. There is a need to expand and revise this nomenclature so that it is more gender appropriate.  It is important to acknowledge that a significant number of females and males in our society are socialized differently.  While a gender-neutral (humanistic) approach to sexual abuse may seem ideal, as a practical matter, we cannot ignore the gender differences that result from the socialization process.  This process affects early development stages and this is applicable to treating males of all ages. The focus of this chapter is on the highly developed, covert, presexual conditioning process that is the mark of most sexual abuse of males.

Published in 1990, the author provides important intersectional links between patriarchal dominance and sexual violation.  Thirty-three years later, these observations remain relevant to understanding the social/political context that continues to fuel the epidemic of sexual victimization for men and male-identified individuals as well as for women and female-identified individuals.

This chapter from Understanding the Sexual Betrayal of Boys and Men focuses on the effects of sexual trauma for gay and bisexual males. The authors challenge traditionally rigid paradigms for understanding gender and sexuality. This discussion is particularly relevant for men and male-identified survivors of sexual victimization.

Support Groups:  We continue to grow our services for on-line virtual access for Support Groups. This area of direct services is managed by a Weekend of Recovery Alumnus; group sessions are co-facilitated by Alumni Peer Leaders who have been trained in group dynamic skills

    • Current groups include:

      • 15-session support groups for Weekend of Recovery Alumni; new groups will continue to be launched approximately every 6 months

    • Future groups in planning for 2023:

      • 6-8 session support groups for survivors who have not yet attended a Weekend of Recovery

      • Groups for Partners of men / male-identified survivors

A website landing page will soon open to the public and will allow entry portals to register for waiting lists for Support Groups. Click HERE for more information.

Weekends of Recovery (WORs): Weekends and Days of Recovery remain a flagship of MenHealing services. Since September 2001 through fall 2022 (21 years!) we have conducted 94 WOR/DOR events.

    • New Event for 2023: We remain sensitive to reaching underserved populations of men and male-identified survivors. Video Production: We hope to continue expanding our growing video library, featuring men and male-identified survivors sharing incredible healing stories of hope and inspiration.

HOME Project (Healing Outreach for Men Everywhere): was initiated and is co-managed by a WOR Alumnus. The HOME project conceptualizes and creates educational materials about sexual victimization and has partnered with key individuals in the prison systems in Ohio and Indiana to upload the materials onto the tablets for incarcerated individuals in those states. The goal of the project is to provide real time tools for understanding and healing from the impact of sexual victimization. To date, the materials developed by the HOME project are accessible to 75,000 individuals. Materials are available at the HOME landing page at our website.
