THANKS TO ALTA FOR MANY YEARS OF WORKING TOGETHER

We have just concluded our 31st healing event at Alta, UT. Throughout the past twenty years, the profound beauty of Alta has provided an incredible location for our Weekends of Recovery. This tranquil environment has allowed hundreds of survivors to discover more about their authentic self, connect with others, and thereby embrace the process of healing in community. We are forever grateful to the amazing staff at Alta Lodge, who have been reliable in all aspects of their service and who have actively nurtured our environment of community.

HONORING THE VOICES OF MEN WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED A WEEKEND OF RECOVERY

NEW ALUMNI PEER SUPPORT GROUPS OPEN FOR REGISTRATION

We are pleased to announce that we will be starting a new round of Alumni Peer Support Groups beginning in early November. The support groups are open to all Weekend of Recovery alumni and will run every other week for 15 sessions. Each group will be co-facilitated by alumni who have been specially trained as peer leaders. The peer leaders are supervised by licensed therapists who are part of the MenHealing network.

Contact Adam Frost, Support Group Project Manager
    at
adamfrost@menhealing.org if you are interested in attending. Previous participants in the peer support groups are welcome to apply; priority will be given to alumni who have not previously attended a group.

    EXPANDING OUR OUTREACH

We are energized by increased inquiries for MenHealing personnel to provide presentations and trainings. Current collaborations are in process with organizations in Alaska, Ohio, Texas, and nationally. Contact us if you have a request for our participation in an event, conference, or staff training:  jimstruve@menhealing.org

Starting in October, we will be reformatting some aspects of our outreach and engagement. This will include a change in frequency of our Newsletter from every two weeks to instead once monthly.  STAY TUNED!!

Hope and healing for survivors is only possible because of financial support from individual grassroots donors like YOU.  Consider becoming a HEALING HERO by becoming a monthly recurring donor at any amount of support.

Help us continue building the movement to end sexual violence.

    MELANATED GATHERING

EXPANDING RESOURCES FOR MEN AND MASCULINE-IDENTIFIED SURVIVORS OF COLOR

Over the 2023 Memorial Day weekend, a group of black and brown men convened in an effort to build community with one another and explore ways they can work together to support male survivors of color. These men already provide support to many survivors of color and this was an opportunity to build community and learn from one another. With the help of MenHealing facilitators, Brian McCloud, Tosin Akindele, Kenton Kirby, and anti-racist educator Richard Smith, this convening was truly a powerful event.

Over the course of an inspiring weekend, the attendees wove a vibrant tapestry of their experiences and insights, each thread intricately representing a story of support, empowerment, and transformation. An eclectic array of backgrounds, with voices resonating from Hawaii to the nearby city of Schenectady, NY, converged into a chorus of camaraderie. This event was more than a gathering—it was a testament to the strength that unity can create, and the potential that a convening like this can lead to.

We would like to thank our partners at the Watershed Center in beautiful Millerton, NY for their amazing hospitality for the first Melanated MenHealing convening. We look forward to having another convening where we can continue to build on how MenHealing can intentionally engage and support survivors of color.

OUR LATEST WEBINAR WAS A SUCCESS!!!!

We are thrilled to announce the successful launch of our brand-new webinar series, titled "Who's Afraid Of The Big Bad Wolf?," which took place on July 20th. The inaugural session, Let's Say Gay, delved into the intersectional impact of trauma on individuals who identify as gay, bisexual, queer, or transgender.

The webinar featured an engaging and insightful overview of the topic by the esteemed Lisa Diamond, a renowned psychologist, gender studies researcher, and feminist. Her expertise brought depth, perspective, and hope to the discussion.

To demonstrate Lisa’s themes of joy and celebrating identity, Toronto’s camp vamp of a certain age, Selena Vyle, gave us a rousing drag performance that was both entertaining and inspiring.

What made the session truly dynamic was the moderated discussion that followed, featuring three male survivors - Ben, David, and Tyler - each with their unique experiences as sexually diverse individuals. Their firsthand accounts and personal journeys added a powerful and relatable dimension to the conversation.

Stay tuned as we have begun to plan a second webinar for this series, scheduled for October 2023. We have some great ideas percolating for this session where we’ll be talking openly about healthy sex! Our goal is to develop this series into quarterly webinars, providing a dynamic and inclusive platform to discuss the intersectionality of trauma with important and controversial contextual issues. By bringing together diverse perspectives, we hope to cultivate and expand connection, understanding and community.

All proceeds from registrations and additional donations for these webinars will support direct services offered by MenHealing.

ONWARD TO OUR 100th WEEKEND OF RECOVERY!

We are in the final stages of preparation for the 2023 Advanced Weekend of Recovery. Registration is now open for our 2023 Level 1 Weekend of Recovery at Alta, UT.  We invite survivors who have never experienced a WOR at this spectacular venue to consider joining us for our farewell visit to the Alta Lodge. Scheduling and logistical changes at the Lodge necessitate that this year’s event will be our final WOR to be conducted at this location.

BEST FRIENDS SERVICE PROJECT AN INSPIRING SUCCESS

For the third consecutive year, MenHealing Staff, WOR Alumni, and Allies recently provided three days of volunteer service work at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah). Best Friends and MenHealing share a commitment for movement-building to end mistreatment for all living beings.

During our three-day visit to the Sanctuary, our team provided service work for dogs, pigs, and wild friends.  In addition, we shared time for a hiking trip to nearby Zion National Park.

This three-day service project allowed our team of volunteers to contribute important springtime house-keeping tasks for the animals as well as deepen our love and care for each other. Check out these powerful visuals that convey many joyful moments during our time together at Best Friends.

    MELANATED MENHEALING GROUP:

A COLLABORATION OF MALE-IDENTIFIED MEN OF COLOR THERAPISTS AND HEALERS

Weekend of Recovery (WOR) events for men and male-identified survivors of sexual victimization were launched in 2001. Since MenHealing assumed management for the WORs in 2018, these healing experiences have evolved to include somatic healing, joy, and building connections. We have also been working to create more opportunities for male-identified survivors plus their friends and families to stay connected beyond the weekend gatherings. We firmly believe that healing happens in many different ways, and our events reflect this.

Despite efforts to diversify our programs, we have noticed that we are not reaching a significant number of men of color. Thus, we are convening a “Melanated MenHealing Group” during the last weekend of May 2023.

Meet the Team for the Melanated MenHealing Group -  Brian, Richard, Tosin, & Kenton

This gathering will bring together male-identified men of color therapists and healers who understand the complex layers of harm that many survivors of color have to navigate outside of the incident(s) or event(s) of their sexual victimization.

Our hope is that this convening will be a collaborative opportunity for participants to learn from one another and expand our own community of healers for survivors of color. We are thrilled at the possibilities that may arise from this convening.

MENHEALING EXTENDS OUR PRESENCE FOR INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE IN VIENNA, AUSTRIA

At MenHealing, we understand the diverse nature of sexual victimization and its many forms, and one that can often be overlooked for male survivors, even within our own healing communities, is sex trafficking.

We are committed to supporting ALL survivors and, in the spirit of collaboration and community, MenHealing's Creative Director, Jordan Masciangelo, has recently been working alongside organizations, agencies, researchers, and policy-makers throughout the country, providing lived-experience consultation services, trainings, and event speaking on the socialization of men and boys, the impact of sexual exploitation on male survivors, and how to better serve male survivors of sex trafficking.

Jordan's incredible work earned him an invitation to be a speaker at last week's International 23rd Conference of the Alliance Against Trafficking in Persons at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, Austria. Organized by the OSCE (The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe), this event brings together governmental ambassadors, leaders, policy-makers, and NGOs from 57 countries across the Americas, Europe and Central Asia to collaborate on solutions to end human trafficking, and we are thrilled to be part of this important initiative.
