Alumni Service Project/Hiking Weekend
This Alumni Event will provide an opportunity for survivors who have previously completed a Level 1 MenHealing or Taking Back Ourselves WOR to give back in service of healing for precious animals who call the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary their home between homes.Registration is now open and will be open until April 8th or until limited spaces are filled.
We are excited to offer a special Service Project/Hiking Alumni Weekend option for 2021. This novel weekend will be conducted at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary located near Kanab, UT. The nearest airports to Kanab are St. George, UT. = 1 ½ hour; Las Vegas, NV = 3 hours; or Salt Lake = 5 hours. Each participant will be provided a link to the Transportation Forum to encourage ridesharing.
Best Friends is a safe haven for approximately 1,600 homeless animals. At the Sanctuary, animals are loved and given what they need to live their best lives until they find their forever homes. For some, it is a place of recovering and healing and for others it is their home between homes. Best Friends is the largest no-kill animal sanctuary in the United States and is the home base for Best Friends Animal Society.

COVID Safety Measures
The Best Friends Service Project weekend will be conducted in compliance with all CDC recommendations for COVID-19 precautions. Specific guidelines and procedures will be implemented to maximize safety for WOR participants and Facilitators and will include:
- ALL participants will be guaranteed single room occupancy, with exclusive access to their individual lodging space for the duration of the weekend
- All participants, facilitators, and staff will be required to adhere to safety guidelines that are recommended by CDC during the time of our event, including pre-event & daily COVID screening, physical distance/face masks/use of sanitizer protocols
- Registration for this event will be limited to a maximum of 12 participants to allow greater capacity for physical distance.
This Alumni Service Project Weekend will begin with dinner on Thursday, April 22nd, 2020, followed by an evening orientation and safety guidelines process session.
Three volunteer shifts will be scheduled at the Sanctuary, one each day for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (4/23 – 4/25/21). Participants will work together as a group in several of our animal care areas and the tasks will depend on the needs of the Sanctuary. Some project examples are deep cleaning in the animal care areas, assisting with socialization, trail maintenance, landscaping, weeding, or painting.
Participants will have an opportunity for a second session caring for animals or moderate-level hike on Saturday afternoon.
Process groups will be conducted on Friday and Saturday evening, after dinner.
This Alumni Service Project/Hiking Program will officially end at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, 4/25/21.
Lodging will be provided at the Kanab Red Hills Best Western Hotel. All participants will be guaranteed single occupancy rooms, with a choice of King or Queen size bed. Participants can add additional night at the hotel for $69 + Taxes and leave on Monday if they choose – additional night reservation will be need to be made directly with the hotel.
Activities Before and After the Service project Weekend
You may want to arrive in the area early or stay beyond the event. There are many other things to do and see in the area.
A visit to nearby Bryce Canyon and/or Zion National Parks might be enjoyable. Bryce Canyon is within 90 minutes and Zion is within 40 minutes drive time from Kanab.

About This Weekend of Recovery
Completion of a Level 1 Weekend of Recovery (WOR) is a prerequisite for Alumni to attend this Alumni WOR.
This Alumni event retreat is longer than the Level 1 WOR,check-in/registration at hotel will be 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.

We are expecting high interest in this event. There is a maximum of 12 total slots available for this weekend. After we reach our capacity number of registrations, we will collect a waiting list. Registration will be open until April 8, 2021.
The basic registration fee of $1200 for a queen bed single room or $1400 for king bed single room includes 3 nights lodging (Thursday through Saturday), meals from Thursday dinner thru Sunday lunch, and all program fees.
There will be no Financial Assistance grants available for this Service Project event.

Cancellation Policy: Due to the limited number of spaces, please let us know immediately if you will be unable to attend so that we can allow a waiting list registrant to attend.
All cancellations made before 30 days prior to event date will allow refund minus $150 non-refundable deposit; no refunds will be issued during final 30 days prior to event date.
Exceptions to this policy will be considered for instances where your cancellation is due to circumstances related to COVID. Please contact Trisha Massa if this is applicable for your need to cancel.
